Night Light

I'll always love that lighthouse
with the green light.
For nearly two centuries
it has beamed
four seconds off, one second on.
I still count to make sure. One-and-
two-and-three-and-four-and-five-and.
It's visible thirteen miles out to sea
and when I'm thinking of home
in the dark.

This family photograph of the West Pier lighthouse, Whitehaven, Cumbria, which was built in 1832, was taken in the fading light of  a December afternoon in 2011.
